The Reading Art Book Club next meets on Wednesday, December 12, at 2pm in the Las Cruces Museum of Art instead of our usual meeting time of 2:30pm. This month’s selection is Painting Methods of the Impressionists by Bernard Dunstan.
This revised edition of Bernard Dunstan’s authoritative text Painting Methods of the Impressionists (first published in 1976) is supplemented by 135 full-color reproductions of the works of 16 Impressionist masters including Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, and Degas. In addition, there are over 40 color details taken from various works that scrutinize the Impressionist painting surface and provide a closeup look at such aspects of Impressionist painting including brushwork, glazing effects, the use of palette knives, stippling, the effect of light, and the application of color.
Bernard Dunstan (1920-2017) was one of Great Britain’s leading painters. His work has been featured in the London Museum, the National Gallery of New Zealand, the art galleries of Coventry, Plymouth, Bristol, and Aberdeen, as well as in many private collections. He was a member of the Royal Academy of Arts, the New English Art Club, and the Royal West of England Academy. At the time of his death, he was the longest serving Royal Academician.
