Tombaugh Day at the Museum of Nature & Science, Saturday, Feb. 23

February 17, 2019

The Museum of Nature & Science will host “Tombaugh Day” on Saturday, February 23, 2019 from 10am-12pm. This is a free, family event that is open to the public.

Every year the museum honors the work of local astronomer Clyde Tombaugh. This year’s event will include a special presentation from Tombaugh’s son, Alden Tombaugh, at 10am. Alden Tombaugh will discuss the lifetime works of his father, including his discovery of Pluto and contributions to the development of research centers in southern New Mexico. At 11am, Solar System Ambassador and NASA IT Specialist Richard Pacheco will talk about how astronomers create color images to interpret data from astronomic investigations.

Apache Point Observatory will join the event this year with the NMSU Astronomy Department and Museum of Nature & Science, providing hands-on activities and demonstrations for all ages. Solar observation telescopes will be set up at the main entrance to the museum at 411 N. Main Street for safe viewing of the sun. Astronomers of all ages and abilities are invited to attend.

Admission to the Museum of Nature & Science is free. The museum is located at 411 North Main Street and is open Tuesday through Friday from 10am to 4:30pm, and Saturday from 9am to 4:30pm.  For additional information, visit the website at: http://las-cruces.org/museums or call (575) 522-3120.
