STEAMpunk – Archie Alexander, Mathematician and Engineer at the Museum of Nature & Science, Feb. 16

February 9, 2019

The Museum of Nature & Science presents “STEAMpunk – Archie Alexander” Saturday, February 16, 2019, at 11:30am. The program, intended for ages 7 – 12, is free and open to the public.

Archie Alexander was an American engineer, mathematician, and architect. Alexander was the first African-American engineering student at the University of Iowa where he earned his Bachelor of Science. He overcame prejudice to become a civil engineer, eventually overseeing bridge construction projects in the Midwest. He went on to open his own company and contribute to many social and civic improvements in Iowa. Participants will learn about Alexander’s accomplishments and compete in a bridge building challenge to support the weight of a can of soup.

“STEAMpunk” is offered monthly, highlighting the work of an historic scientist through hands on exploration.

The Museum of Nature & Science is located at 411 N. Main Street and is open Tuesday through Friday from 10am to 4:30pm and Saturday from 9am to 4:30pm. For additional information, visit the website at: http://las-cruces.org/museums or call (575) 522-3120.
