“Earth Science Week,” Oct. 13 – 20

October 8, 2018

The Museum of Nature & Science invites you to join the celebration of “Earth Science Week” October 13-20, 2018, with a week full of geological and paleontological explorations. All events are free and open to the public.

The events will begin with “Fossil Day,” a family friendly event on Saturday, October 13, from 9am-12pm at the Museum of Nature & Science. Activities and demonstrations will be presented by museum education staff, the Bureau of Land Management – Las Cruces Office (BLM), and NMSU’s Vertebrate and Zuhl Museums. BLM paleontologist Colin Dunn will lead a guided tour of the Prehistoric Trackways National Monument at 1pm. Interested hikers will need to transport themselves to the trail head and be prepared with water, good shoes, and sun protection.

On Wednesday, October 17, the Museum of Nature & Science will host paleontologist Dr. Kate “Doc Ziggy” Zeigler at the “Active Galaxy Lecture Series,” where she will present “Paleontology in New Mexico” at 5:30pm. Guests will learn about what it really means to be a paleontologist and guests can discuss their favorite New Mexican dinosaurs.

A special edition of “Teen Science Café” hosted by the Museum of Nature & Science and the NMSU Department of Geological Sciences will take place at NMSU’s Gardiner Hall Thursday, October 18. Teens in grades 6-12 are invited for dinner, dialogue, and demonstrations with a professional geologist starting at 5:30pm.

To wrap up the week of events, the Museum of Nature & Science will host “STEAMpunk – Florence Bascom” Saturday, October 20, at 11:45am. Dr. Bascom was the second female geologist to earn a Ph. D. in the United States. Participants will explore her career and examine local geology in the museum’s classroom.

The Museum of Nature & Science is located at 411 N. Main Street and is open Tuesday through Friday from 10am to 4:30pm, and Saturday from 9am to 4:30pm. For additional information, visit the website at: http://las-cruces.org/museums or call (575) 522-3120.
