The Land-Potential Knowledge System: Using Mobile Phone Technology for Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Land Management

Join the Museum of Nature and Science on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 from 5:30pm-6:30pm for the “Active Galaxy Lecture Series.” Dr. Amy Quandt will present, “The Land-Potential Knowledge System: Using Mobile Phone Technology for Biodiversity LandPKSConservation and Sustainable Land Management”. The Land-Potential Knowledge System (LandPKS) is an open-source, free mobile app that was created to help address the issue of conservation by providing tools that help land managers conserve biodiversity and make more sustainable land use choices. The app works as an innovative, mobile data collection and analysis tool to support local land management aimed to optimize design and implementation of land restoration, food security, and biodiversity conservation programs. Mobile technology is one emerging tool for conservation and sustainable land management, and LandPKS is one tool that aims to help users globally make better land use decisions.

Dr. Quandt earned her Ph.D. in Environmental Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder and is an assistant professor at the Jornada Experimental Range at NMSU. She also serves as the global coordinator for LandPKS where she works to coordinate project staff and LandPKS users.

Admission to the Museum of Nature and Science is free. The museum is located at 411 North Main Street and is open Tuesday through Friday from 10am to 4:30pm and Saturday from 9am to 4:30pm. For additional information, visit the website at: http://las-cruces.org/museums or call (575) 522-3120.
