December 15, 2016

Volunteers with Weaving for Justice will present a film screening by Janet Darrow titled, “A Maya Celebration,” on Friday, December 16 at 1 pm, followed by a talk by Janet Darrow and Christine Eber.

Janet Darrow and Christine Eber are volunteers with Weaving for Justice, a non-profit organization that works with Maya weavers in Chiapas, Mexico. The organization specifically works with the Maya women’s weaving cooperatives in highland Chiapas, Mexico. The goal of the organization is to assist the cooperatives to continue living in their lands in sustainable ways that respects the land, language, and traditions. The film features the inauguration of the first meeting house of Tsobol Antzetik (Women United) which is one of the cooperatives. It was built in April 2016 with money raised by, “Weaving for Justice.”

In addition to their work with Weaving for Justice, Janet Darrow and Christine Eber volunteer at La Frontera, a collective fair trade store in Nopalito’s Galería at 326 S. Mesquite St. in Las Cruces. After the film, they will be showing some of the products sold at the store which opens for the holiday season each Saturday from 9 am – 6 pm starting November 12th and closing on December 24th. The store offers hand-made work from three women’s artisan collectives on the border: Palomas Oilcloth Designs in Palomas, Chihuahua; Centro Santa Catalina in Juárez; Guerilla Prayer Flags in Juárez; and weaving cooperatives in highland Chiapas, Mexico. The store is run by volunteers and all proceeds go to the artisan groups in Mexico.
