Curator Susan Christie and Artist Katharine Kreisher to Speak in the Museum of Art, Nov. 4
The Las Cruces Museum of Art will host an Afternoon with Art on Wednesday, November 9. At 12:30pm, curator Susan Christie will present “Traversing Space: A Curator’s Tour of the Gallery,” followed by “Dream Installation Series” by artist Katharine Kreisher at 1pm.
Susan has a B.A. in Cultural Anthropology/Art from the University of Minnesota. Her post-graduate studies include a program at the Zhejiang Academy of Art, Hangzhou, China. Christie’s 40 year career as a gallery artist has included having her work exhibited in twelve states, seventeen museum shows and four museum private collections. Her experience includes ownership of two galleries, serving as an independent gallery advisor, curating and installing exhibitions, writing reviews, essays and biographical documentation. Originally from Minnesota, Susan has traveled extensively, living primarily in non-urban environments. She currently resides in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico.
Kreisher is Professor of Art at Hartwick College. Among Kreisher’s many credentials is her M.F.A., University at Albany, State University of NY. Kreisher is a printmaker, photographer and installation artist. “Hekate’s Dream” is a knit and crocheted installation, part of her ongoing series of “dream” installations, journeys into unconscious narratives, reworking memories and myths. “Hekate’s Dream” references desert plant forms and blooms, as if Hekate, goddess of ancient Greece, dreamed of a landscape where plants give way to surprising blooms, funnels deliver water, and whirlwinds come and go.
Transforming Space – Transforming Fiber continues through January 21, 2017. The exhibition, curated by Susan A. Christie, features nine nationally-recognized fiber artists who explore the ways that fiber-based artworks can transform the experience of being in, and moving through, physical space. Included in the exhibition are installations and sculptural works by Michelle Cooke (Taos, NM), John Garrett (Las Cruces, NM), Tim Harding (Minneapolis, MN), Katharine Kreisher (Oneonta, NY), and Santa Fe artists Signe Stuart, Mayumi Nishida, Gail Rieke, s.c. Thayer, and David Wagner.
Admission to the Museum of Art is free. The museum is located at 491 N Main Street and is open Tuesday through Friday from 10am to 4:30pm, and Saturday from 9am to 4:30pm.
