BROWN BAG LECTURE: “The Capitan Depot Museum”

March 3, 2016

Tuesday, March 8, 12:00 noon

The Las Cruces Railroad Museum hosts a free Brown Bag Lecture at 12:00 noon on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.  On March 8, Paul Durham will present “The Capitan Depot Museum.”

Originally located in Coalora NM, the depot that currently houses the Capitan Museum was built to handle the transport of coal.  When the coal field was closed in the early 1900s, the rail line was extended and the depot was moved to Capitan.  The Capitan depot handled freight and passengers until the mid-1940s, then became a storage building for a variety of enterprises.  Local enthusiasts are in the process of turning the depot into a museum.

Paul Durham taught school in Texas, New Mexico, and California for 42 years.  He also was a partner in a construction company and rebuilds antique cars.  His deep interest in New Mexico history has led him to be involved in the restoration of the Capitan depot.

The museum is located at 351 N. Mesilla Street and is openTuesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Thursdays until 8:00 p.m., and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  For additional information, visit the website at: http://las-cruces.org/museums or call (575) 647-4480.

If you need an accommodation for a disability to enable you to fully participate in this event please contact the museum 48 hours prior to the event.
