“Descansos: Love, Grief and Faith” at the Branigan Cultural Center

October 20, 2013

Branigan Cultural Center LogoThe Branigan Cultural Center presents descansos. This exhibit of photographs by Storm Sermay opens on Friday, November 1 and concludes on Saturday, November 23. An artist’s reception is to be held from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on Friday, November 1 during the monthly Ramble.

You are driving and, out of the corner of your eye, you see a roadside memorial. It may be a simple cross or a bicycle painted white – a ghost bike – and it might include mementos commemorating the person who died in an accident. Designs on this seemingly unpretentious monument make statements as to the life that was lived. These shrines – descansos – are for the loved ones who remain and they are also for those are interested in knowing how a family responded to the death of a loved one.

Las Cruces resident, Storm Sermay, began photographing birds in 2005 and, from that beginning, has expanded the horizon for her camera’s lens. Her works have been exhibited in shows in Las Cruces, El Paso and in other regions of the United States. Ms. Sermay studied photography as an art form and has “…become particularly interested in ‘the landscape’ of disrepair…that is visible where I live…and travel.” The color and black and white pieces that comprise Descansos: Love, Grief and Faith are touching examples of grief and, also, celebrations of lives lost.

The Branigan Cultural Center is located at 501 N. Main Street. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 9am to 4:30pm. For more information, contact the Branigan Cultural Center at (575) 541-2154 or visit the Center’s web site at
