SW Senior Lifestyle Expo Offers MoNaS Activities on Saturday

March 18, 2013

At the Southwest Senior Lifestyle Expo at the Las Cruces Convention Center this weekend, the Museum of Nature and Science (MoNaS) will share two great sets of activities.

On Friday morning  (March 22) you can hear about the history of Dripping Springs, then go explore it in person with a noted author.

  • At 9 a.m. (on Friday), Chris Schurtz, author of Historic Las Cruces: The Story of Las Cruces and the Mesilla Valley, will present a talk that explores the history of Las Cruces, including the varied and interesting ventures at Dripping Springs. Schurtz is a historian and journalist who has also written for the Las Cruces Sun-News, My Las Cruces, and the Southern New Mexico Historical Review. The presentation will be followed by a book signing and the opportunity for a hike at Dripping Springs led by MoNaS Education Curator Kim Hanson. Reservations are required for the hike and can be made by calling (575) 522-3120 or e-mailing khanson@las-cruces.org. Limited seating is available on the museum’s van for round-trip transportation between the Convention Center and Dripping Springs. There is a $3 per vehicle charge at Dripping Springs for those who take their own vehicles.

On Saturday afternoon, learn about animals in our area.

  • At 2 p.m. March 23, MoNaS Naturalist Richard Quick will present Our Cold-Blooded Neighbors: Reptiles and Amphibians of Doña Ana County. There is no need to fear these strange and fascinating animals once you have learned the facts. Learn how to enjoy the harmless majority, and stay safe around the venomous minority. Some reptiles and amphibians will be present for visitors to safely make their acquaintance.

The Museum of Nature and Science is located at 411 North Main Street in Las Cruces. All programs and activities are free and open to the public. For accommodation for a disability, contact the museum 24 hours in advance at (575) 522-3120.
