Harvey Girls at the Railroad Museum

March 5, 2013

The Las Cruces Railroad Museum will host a presentation at noon on Tuesday, March 12, 2013. The Harvey Girls of El Paso volunteer group will present the history of Fred Harvey and the Harvey Girls as they operated El Paso’s Harvey House in the first half of the 20th century. Harvey built an empire catering to the Santa Fe Railroad travelers, providing excellent quality food at restaurants along the route. He is often credited with civilizing the west by hiring young women to serve in the hotels and restaurants.

Appearing in Harvey Girl costumes will be Patricia Kiddney, Prestene Dehrkoop, Sharon Cowell and Lynn Brightman. All are members of various historical societies in El Paso, including the Historic Concordia Cemetery Heritage Association, Preservation Alliance of El Paso, El Paso County Historical Commission, and the Harvey Girls of El Paso 1906-1948.

Light refreshments served. Please R.S.V.P. by calling Joanne at 647-4480.

The museum is located at 351 N. Mesilla Street, at the intersection of Las Cruces Ave. Admission is free, and it’s open Thursday – Saturday, 9 am – 4:30 pm. For more information, visit the museum website.
